Leadership is such an important aspect of employee satisfaction and, as a result, patient care. Leaders are available to guide others, think in terms of team needs, advocate for the best interests of staff and patients alike, and motivate others (Broome and Marshall, 2021). Leadership and management are two different things, with management focused on directive actions and leadership focused on working together and motivating others to work together for a common goal.

Transformational leadership is a style which strives to empower others. Transformational leaders lead by example and motivate others to act in a similar manner. They seek out the opinion of their team and engage them in the decision-making process and work to allow fir the success of others. Transformational leadership has been shown to increase employee engagement and employee satisfaction, leading to improved outcomes for patients and organizations (Boamah, Laschinger, Wong, and Clarke, 2018). Transformational leadership encourages professional development and teamwork which has been linked to improved performance and improvement of population health in public health departments (Duggan et al., 2015). During this challenging time, where retention of nurses is so important to the success of a facility and so closely linked to patient outcomes, relational focused leadership styles, such as transformational leadership, is vital to improving the practice environment. Relational style leadership has been associated with improved work-life balance, decreased burnout, and improved outcomes in the workplace (Cummings et al., 2018).

I began my career with my current employer in 2012 with a wonderful and inspiring team leader named Jane. Jane led by example and spoke of the benefit of the services we provided. She gave each team member opportunities to succeed by assigning projects and then providing guidance until we had our feet on solid ground. Jane led our weekly team meetings by asking our input on the topics of the week and deferring to our wishes, even when she presented compelling arguments to move in a different direction, and when our ideas were not successful, she looked to us as a team for solutions. We all felt we were a part of something bigger than ourselves because of her leadership. On a personal level, she made returning to school for my BSN a possibility by arranging my schedule to allow for clinical rotations. Jane is the person I wish to model my own leadership style after; she was inspiring on a professional level and encouraged the professional and personal pursuits of individual team members to ensure a healthy work/life balance.
