WSSU Islamic Region Have Dominated the US Press Coverage Muslims and Media Paper

Step 1: Please choose one of the events/topics involving, addressing, or representing American Muslims as listed here (see below for another option): – Pastor Terry Jones Qur’an burning in Florida (2013) – the murders of three Muslim students in Chapel Hill (2015) – the San Bernardino shooting (2015) – the attack on the “Pulse” Club in Orlando (2016) – Donald Trump campaign ideas about Muslims (2015-16) – the “Muslim Ban” 1.0 executive order from January 2017 – the election of Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar to Congress (pick one or discuss both) (2018) – Linda Sarsour and the Women’s March (2017 or 2019) – Revelations about CAIR being infiltrated by FBI informants (2020 or 2022) – NYPD surveillance of Muslim communities after 9/11 – Muslim athletes and hijab (ongoing) – You can also identify a topic that is not listed here, as long as it is from the last decade, so starting in 2012. (I like the one on the pulse night club)

Step 2: Find at least five newspaper articles from leading and national US newspapers (online versions) such as the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today etc. Online news media that publish articles and opinion pieces such as CNN are also acceptable. Step 3: Read the articles carefully. Step 4: Write an analysis of the articles you selected. How do they represent American Muslims? Which forms of self-representation do you recognize, and would you characterize them as successful? What impact could media representations such as the ones you selected have on American Muslim communities? It is important in this step to synthesize your analysis of all the articles, rather than discussing them one by one. Step 5: Create a separate page with a bibliography of the articles you read and analyzed including the author, title, newspaper, date and if available page number. Also include a link to each article – this is important so I can look at the articles you worked with through the electronic copy of your paper online. Make sure to write 1000 of your words for this paper, not copy/cite words from the autobiography beyond a phrase or short sentence.
