Writing Question

Description

Introduction / Purpose / Instructions

If you are a little bit of a troll at heart, you will enjoy this exercise. Here is what you’ll do:

First, look through your academic papers that you have written for other classes. You want a good APA-styled social-science paper for best results, and the longer and more citation-heavy, the better.

Next, go to the Beall’s List Website, which is here at https://beallslist.net/ Links to an external site.. You’ll remember, this is the list John Bohanan talked about in his open-source journal sting and his chocolate-weight loss gambit. It’s a huge list of suspected fake journals.

  1. Look through the list for the fake journals with the most legit sounding name that seems like a good match for your paper. Pick three of them. Follow the link to the three and make sure they are not dead; turnover is pretty high with these. Remember, your goal is to get accepted in a predatory journal, not a legitimate one; so look for signs of disreputability such as creative punctuation, careless spelling errors, etc.
  2. Pick one of these three. Following the writer’s guidelines in your target journal, submit your paper for publication. Don’t lie to them, but don’t tell them you’re doing this for a class assignment either. You’re just an undergraduate student with an academic paper you’re proud of, looking into the possibility of publishing it. (Here is a Word document with some suggested text Actionsto use in your cover letter.) Above all, DO NOT PAY OR GIVE THEM ANY CREDIT-CARD INFO.  Your goal is to get an e-mail back from them advising you that your paper has been accepted.

The journal will most likely respond by telling you your paper has been accepted, and that the publication fee is several hundred dollars, and that as soon as they receive it, they’ll publish. At that point, reply politely and professionally that you have decided the paper is not yet ready to publish, and that you’ll get back in touch when it is.

Take a screenshot of the acceptance e-mail (or rejection, if that happens, although it probably will not) and attach the screenshot in your submission for this assignment. If you like, you can also attach your paper that you submitted, although this is not required. (It is also possible that you will receive no reply at all. If that happens, submit a screenshot of your outgoing e-mail instead.)

Write a 300- to 600-word account of your experience doing this.

Formatting requirements

Write 300 to 600 words. (1 point penalty per bloc of 100 words too many or too few)

Use paragraph breaks — one every time you change subjects. (1 point penalty)

Overview

  1. Based on your readings, lectures, and lab this week, you should be noticing the tremendous power that improved energy efficiency can have in reducing energy demand, which in turn can resolve conflicts over energy supplies and address global greenhouse gas emissions.

So, let’s take this information from the abstract to your real life. First, find out if there is a Climate Action Plan for your city, state, etc. and what it includes – particularly plans for energy transition and efficiency! OSU has a Climate Action Plan too!

Then, google ways to save energy everyday in your life – you might be surprised how easy it can be!

Respond to the prompts below, and to your classmates.

Important reminder: We require all discussion posts to be uploaded to the companion TurnItIn Check assignment so it can be evaluated to assess your use of sources and effective paraphrasing. If you do not submit your response to BOTH assignments you cannot receive credit.

You may want to review the discussion guidelines.
