Discussion 1: By converting aircraft from fuel to electric, a vast network change must occur in the aviation industry. Particularly with the Twin Otter, which operates to small, remote strips, airports across the globe must add charging stations for aircraft batteries. This will be a major implication for small airports as mentioned above, due to their often lower operating budgets and improvement opportunities. Due to the lower potential energy provided with batteries compared to fuel, the Twin Otter will need to recharge more often than it would refuel. This means that smaller airports, which may not have needed to provide refueling services, may now need to provide charging stations. An example of this is Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport, on the small Dutch island of Saba. With the world’s shortest commercially-served aircraft runway, Saba requires the use of aircraft like the Twin Otter. The only air carrier serving this airport, Winair, uses a fleet of Twin Otters to operate flights to the nearby, larger Princess Juliana International Airport on the island of St. Maarten. The short flight between the two islands takes around 20-30 minutes. Currently, Winair takes enough fuel for a return trip; meaning refueling is not necessary at Saba. However, with an electric Twin Otter, it is possible that the aircraft batteries may need to be recharged in Saba. Installing this infrastructure on the small island would be incredibly expensive and require much planning.
