West Coast University Picot Advanced Nursing Research Question
Description
Respond to the following post in 150 wThe PICOT question in module two states that for treating sepsis patients in the emergency
department, how would fluid resuscitation compared to not giving fluid resuscitation affect survival
rate within the first hour of arrival? The research method best fitting this PICOT question is a
quantitative design. A qualitative design would not be chosen because Gray and Grove (2021) write
that this method of research is based on the life experiences and cultures of the people experiencing
the study. The PICOT question focuses on a quantitative study because we are comparing a
population’s treatment and its outcomes. This research includes cause and effect. There are
numerical numbers involved with the outcome of the treatment discussed in this post to determine
if the early intervention of fluids is beneficial for sepsis patients.
Quantitative Research
It is impossible to have a randomized control group in the emergency setting because
the goal is to save lives. That would exclude an experimental research approach. An experimental
research approach is a highly controlled environment, making the PICOT question in this post almost
impossible. An emergency department is never highly controlled. Gray and Grove (2021) classify
quantitative research as a pyramid, with descriptive being the lowest, followed by correlational,
quasi-experimental, and experimental at the peak. The ideal research design would be quasi-
experimental. That research design depends on the amount of research that is available. Bloomfield
and Fisher (2019) describe the descriptive design as research when little is known about a PICOT
question and is valuable for finding out the number of times a phenomenon happens. Bloomfield
and Fisher (2019) define correlational design as an important research approach when finding
correlations between two variables in an uncontrolled environment. Rutberg and Bouikidis (2018)
write that descriptive and correlational are not based on an experimental design. There is no
manipulation of the environment or variables. The goal in answering this PICOT question would be
to find quasi-experimental design research articles.
