Walden University Project Status Assessment
Description
A good manager tracks process, project, and product metrics. Project monitoring compares the actual situation against the plan, and project control acts to address deviations. Metrics and measurements allow you to assess the status of a project in quantitative terms (Marchese, 2011).
Now that the three different types of metrics have been established, it is time to take a break from your Employee-Tracking Application to help your coworker identify them in the following scenario:
Today, while working on your Employee-Tracking Application project, an instant message from Jessie appears on your screen saying, “Hey, it has been a while! How have you been?”
Before you have time to reply, Jessie types, “I need your help on one of my projects.”
Since Jessie is a new coworker and you enjoy helping people, you type, “Ok. Tell me about what you are working on.”
Jessie responds, “I just e-mailed you an Excel workbook with metrics reports for a continuing project. Can you explain the trends in the Excel workbook’s data and tell me the project’s status? Also, if there are any additional metrics that would be helpful, please let me know.”
Thinking about the complexities of determining trends and project status, you reply, “I’ll look it over, discuss the metrics with my colleagues, and will get back to you with answers.”
Jessie’s Excel Workbook with the metrics reports is in this unit’s Learning Resources area.
Review “Jessie’s Excel Workbook,” attached below.
Post a memo to Jessie explaining trends in the data in Jessie’s Excel Workbook and discussing how you determine the project status based on the data. Explain how process, project, and product metrics each explain a different part of your interpretation of the trends. Explain what additional metrics would be helpful to better determine the project status.
