Policy is greatly influenced by competing needs within healthcare. They must balance staff, funding, and patient needs all while remaining profitable enough to stay afloat. This may be an important reason for the policy push for home care, prevention, and increasing health literacy. (Broome & Marshall, 2021) The better we can prevent major illnesses, the easier it is to care for patients.

The nursing shortage affects many of these policy changes as well. Since the beginning of the COVD-19 pandemic, healthcare has seen nursing shortages in unprecedented numbers. These shortages prompted the American Nurses Association (ANA) to request government policies that would help bring nurses back to the profession as well as retain current nurses. They requested that government officials address nurses’ mental wellbeing, develop new ways to retain working nurses, help remove barriers to practice and nursing education, along with enforcing strategies that would build a more resilient workforce. (American Nurses Association, 2021) The nursing shortage will be an issue for many generations to come but one thing will remain, we must make sure we are placing the care of the patient before all else. We cannot in good faith make policy changes that might benefit staffing but harm patient care much the same as we cannot agree with policy changes that positively influence healthcare funding if it does not address the individual needs of the patient. (Kelly & Porr, 2018) We must find a working balance between all competing needs.
