Walden University Health & Medical Food and Nutrition Questions

Walden University Health & Medical Food and Nutrition Questions

Description

Good and Bad Food Nutrition Labels

Food labels are the key to understanding what is in the food you eat. They provide nutritional facts, ingredients, and the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of vitamins and minerals. Understanding the nutritional content of food can help you identify healthy and unhealthy foods and make more informed food choices to increase your overall health and wellness.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review Chapters 1 and 2 of Nutrition and You and think about what makes foods healthy or unhealthy.

Review the Week 3 Narrated Presentations: “Healthy Food” and “Food Labels.” Consider

  • Select a food that you think is healthy and a food that you think is unhealthy and review the labels for both.
  • Record the nutritional facts and the ingredient lists of the healthy and unhealthy food items.
  • Select one ingredient you did not recognize in either food label. Research what the item is and consider whether it is appropriate to be in food.
  • With these thoughts in mind:
  • By Day 4

Posta list of the nutritional facts (not including the ingredients) of your healthy food item and your unhealthy food item, and summarize the key differences between them. Explain whether you still believe that your healthy item is healthy and your unhealthy item is unhealthy and why. Explain what you noticed in the label to make you draw this conclusion. (This should include in-depth analysis of the calories, fats, protein, sodium, vitamins and minerals specifically). Then describe one item from one of the food labels (not the nutritional facts) that you do not recognize and explain why the ingredient may have been included. Finally, explain whether you think the unrecognized item is appropriate to be in food and explain why or why not.

Assignment: Weekend Diet and Activity Tracker

For most people, it is common for their eating habits and activity levels to change during weekends. This can be due to factors such as social obligations, family responsibilities, travel, less time for food preparation, and exercise. When a person is tracking food intake and activity levels to improve their health and wellness, it is imperative that he or she tracks weekend days separately from weekdays. For this Application Assignment, you continue to track your own food intake and activity levels over 2 weekend days. You may select Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday.

To prepare for this Assignment:

Keep track of everything you eat and drink for 2 weekend days (Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday).

Go to MyDietAnalysis and log in. Click on the “Profiles” tab and select your personal profile.

http://www.mydietanalysis.com/

Click on the “Diet Tracker” tab and input your food intake for 2 weekend days.

(Note: Be sure to save your changes after each entry.) NOTE: Please save these days as DAY THREE and DAY FOUR so as not to erase the first two entry days.

Record all of your activities for those 2 weekend days using the “Activity Tracker.”

Assignment:

  • From MyDietAnalysis, perform the following actions:
  • Go to the “Reports” tab and choose the following report: MyPlate.

Click on “Annotate Report.” A pop-up box will appear. In that box, answer the following questions:

In which of the five food groups were you furthest away from meeting the recommended daily intakes based on percentage?

Consider the reasons why you were low in that food group. Explain which factors may have contributed to the intake that resulted in the low percentage (cultural or social factors, habit, personal taste preference, and cost). Are these normal factors for you or specific to this time period you are generating these reports? What are some things you can do to offset these impacts in your diet? (2-3 paragraphs)

Suggest two foods that you might eat to help increase your percentage of the daily intake for that food group (choose foods you like to eat). Consider the factors you identified in question #2 as you make your food suggestions. Explain why you chose those two foods and how they specifically will help increase your daily intake for your food group (1-2 paragraphs)
