Description
The purpose of the book review is to consider the sociological concepts illustrated or applied in what you have read. This is not a simple book report, although you should summarize main points. Instead, you should use the book you have read as a “launching pad” for an essay about how the sociological concept(s) you have learned about in Barkan’s text are illustrated in the book. Stick to 1-3 main concepts since this is a short paper.
You should articulate your own critical engagement with the reading as you “unpack” the ideas and arguments you find most relevant and/or interesting. Along the way, you will also demonstrate your synthesis of course materials by incorporating at least 3 other articles in your essay. These articles can be published writings from peer-reviewed journals, or newspaper articles. They can support or refute your argument, just make sure to explain how they relate.
For example, are there micro or macro factors you can discuss? What healthcare issues from the text are illustrated in the book? How does gender, social class, or sexuality affect health (physical or mental) in the book and does that echo what is in the text? How are stages of illness or physician training represented in your book? Does what you learned about environmental pollutants and hazards & neighborhood conditions square with Barkan’s writing? Did you find an interesting article that backs up one idea or another? Tell me about it.
Book reviews should be 3-5 typed, double-spaced pages. you cannot deliver a robust (though concise) paper in less than 3 pages. Use 12-point font and regular margins. Please include page numbers. Use APA citation style throughout and include a list of references. You do not need a cover page or abstract. Reviews should demonstrate conceptual comprehension, synthesis of ideas, and analytical skills. Writing style, such as precision, clarity, essay structure, punctuation, and paragraph development will be considered in evaluation. all papers will be reviewed for plagiarism
