University of Tampa Doctor Assisted Suicide Discussion
Question Description
I’m working on a public health writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
Consider Case 2, in Chapter 10 of the textbook (Vaughn 662). When does a person have a right to take their own life? Should assisted-suicide pacts with others (non-medical professionals) be considered moral/legal? To what extent should they be discouraged or regulated? Explain your reasons behind your view.
Consider Case 3, in Chapter 10 (Vaughn 663-664) The child does seem to be suffering, so perhaps this case is tragic, but justifiable. What do you think? Even though the doctors specify that a child must be “incurably ill” and in “unbearable suffering” to be euthanized, how do we determine this? Is it something that the law/government should be able to do? If we make predictions about their future “quality of life”, we risk being very wrong, and depriving them of a worthwhile future.
