University of Memphis Moral Foundations and Public Debate Discussion
Description
Moral Foundations and Public Debate
With this discussion, I would like for us to begin practicing the skills of trying to determine what values might underlie different positions in a public debate. Please select one of the following propositions. Then tell me what moral foundation you think would most likely lead someone to accept that proposition and what moral foundation would most likely lead someone to reject that proposition. Briefly explain your reasoning.
This is also a chance for us to begin thinking about how to phrase our arguments as neutrally as possible, a very helpful capacity to develop for when we’re talking with someone across the divide from us. If you respond thoughtfully, I should not be able to tell which of the two positions (if either) you actually support.
- “The gene editing of human embryos is the next frontier in medical science and public health. Technologies and procedures that allow us to do so should be explored as thoroughly as possible.”
- “Immigration is the lifeblood of the United States. Our borders should open and accessible to any number of people who want to make a new life here.”
- “The invasion of Ukraine is tragic, but the risks of escalating into a war with another nuclear superpower are too great to justify directly military involvement on the part of the US.”
My Moral foundations were Care, Loyalty, & equality. This is a discussion question.
