Discussion Board 4: Focus on Employee Engagement and Motivation

Employee Engagement and Motivation….these concepts are of major concern for employers because they translate into employee performance which has a major impact on organization performance, profitability, and survival! In the two chapters we are reading for this week, there are no less than 13 different theories and approaches to motivation which use some of the same concepts and practices but with different labels (the listing of all 13 is provided under the heading Choosing an Appropriate Motivational Model on p. 154 of Chapter 7 in your text).

For this DB I want to direct you to a multi-faceted theory of motivation in our text, Expectancy Theory (pp. 123-125 in your text and discussed in Clarifying Expectancy Theory in this week’s content. This theory insists that all 3 of the key variables be strong or at least present in order for an individual to be movitated or engaged (read this stuff, you will see what I mean!). This tells us that it’s NOT just “one thing”….we humans are perhaps more complicated than that! Jumping forward to some Motivational Methods and Programs in Chapter 7, these programs (especially job enrichment/job characteristics model pp. 139-145) suggest further that we humans are not just motivated by “one thing at a time”….it’s several factors interacting at once!

Looking at these models and considering them carefully, draw from your own experience either in terms of self-motivation OR as how you see these factors in play with the empoyees you manage or work with and share how expectancy theory and the programs from chapter 7 actually illustrate employee engagement/motivation. If you don’t have an example from your own work or observation of others, consult with the movie I’ve asked you all to watch….Remember the Titans Link for Remember the Titans “Disney on Demand” for some examples.
