University of Memphis Data Analytics Discussion

Part 1 of this assignment gives you an opportunity to research articles within your field of interest (i.e., your major) that used Linear Regression as a tool in their study. The purpose is to let you see that this tool is frequently used when modeling data.

Part 1 (Note: This is due about 2 weeks prior to Part 2 – use the course calendar for specific dates)

• Do these
  • Identify your major and career interest. This will help you find an article and put it in context for the assignment.
  • Find an article in your major (posted in the last 5-6 years) that explicitly used Linear Regression (Excel, SAS, SPSS, or any other such tool) as part of its analysis.
    • The article must address a specific business problem and use Linear Regression to solve it.
    • A generic article does not qualify – nor does an article that explains Linear Regression.
  • Provide the URL to the article as a citation (other people must be able to easily access your source to do Part 2).
  • Briefly explain the business purpose of the model and the type of regression used (simple, linear / non-linear, integer, categorical, etc.) in summary form. These should be descriptions, not the mathematical details (such as the specific constraint formulas).
    • For this assignment, your audience consists of business people, not analysts or mathematicians.
    • Your readers also understand what Linear Regression is – do not take any time to explain it.
  • Explain the technique used to develop the model if given in the article (forward, backward, etc.)
  • Explain how well the article supports their findings (the various dimensions of Goodness of Fit)
  • Describe the benefits the company / author gained as a result of using Linear Programming on this business problem.
  • Explain what you’ve gained from this article that you can apply to your career – some insight, awareness, or benefit that you weren’t fully aware of prior to doing this research.
