Students are only required to respond to EITHER DB #11 Prompt 4. or 5. (But, if you’re feeling very excited about global health this week — we invite you to respond to both!)
- As you know, our textbook was published in 2013, before the 2015 target date for the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs). As students of global health you also know that a new set of goals, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), were adopted in 2015 with a target date of 2030.
- After reading Chapter 11: Global Health Priorities for the Early 21st Century in our textbook, visit the United Nations’ landing page for the Sustainable Development Goals to explore the 17 SDGs.
- Compare the 8 MDGs with the 17 SDGs. In a substantive paragraph, comment on how the shift from the MDGs to the SDGs reflects – or not – shifts in the field of global health. Frame your reflection in terms of priority health issues and challenges but also how and through which lenses global health actors seek to understand and analyze global health issues and challenges.
- How does the shift from the MDGs to the SDGs reflect the calls to action we have read about and discussed throughout the semester? How do the SDGs still fall short?
- In Chapter 11 of the textbook, the authors identify a number of specific ‘global health priority issues’ they deem especially important to address in the 21st century, including:
- Maternal and Child Health
- ‘The Big Three’: AIDS, TB and Malaria
- Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)
- Cancer
- Surgery
- Choose one of these priority health areas that is outlined or mentioned specifically in the textbook to focus on.
- Using the World Health Organization’s online disease burden resources (and/or other resources you research/identify yourself), update the burden of disease description given in the book from 2013 for the specific priority health area you have chosen. (NOTE: Disease-specific WHO resources can be found here: www.who.int → click on Health Topics on the top left page)
- Which priority issue have you identified?
- How has the burden of disease profile changed (or not) from the profile described/outlined in the book?
- If the burden of disease has improved, why? What interventions or factors have contributed to this improvement?
- If the burden of disease has worsened, why? What are the contributing factors?
