       The last half of the 19th Century, segregation affected the lives of African Americans across the nation. Southern states and territories passed laws limiting the freedoms of African Americans and discriminated against them in public accommodations. The railroad was a prime example of Jim Crow segregation. The United States Supreme Court in 1896, supported Segregation in the Plessy v Ferguson Case. The Court declared “separate but equal” constitutional. In a majority opinion the court argued that Homer Plessy’s constitutional rights had not been violated when he was removed from a “white’s only” section on the train.  

           In this Historical Essay, Students will Identify and explain stereotypes of African American men and women that owner of railroads and other public accommodations used to justify their “Jim Crow” policies. Please construct 4 to 6page Historical Essay.
