UCSD English Censorship Ban Discussion
Description
Respond to the following discussion post
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been banned continuously throughout its history, due in large part to its characters’ use of racial slurs. Many people oppose its inclusion on high school reading lists, for instance, while others believe censorship goes against our first amendment guarantee of freedom of speech. Currently this issue is at the forefront again as social media platforms such as Facebook have also come under fire for allowing hate groups to propagate their messages on their formats.
How do you feel about this issue? Should some speech (or platforms disseminating it) such as books and social media) be censored? If so, what is the criteria for doing so? In other words, who should decide this and how? What are the inherent dangers in censorship? What are the dangers in allowing certain individuals and organizations to propagate hate speech and lies? Discuss your viewpoints.
