There are two parts to the successful completion of the is essay. 

FIRST is visiting a local museum (Online) and using the corresponding print out (see below) to help guide you through the

process of analysis. SECOND you will write an essay around your chosen work of art and
will within your writing respond to the following points:
1) Which chapter (“theme”) would your artwork fit into?
2) Once you have chosen a chapter (“theme”) you will then conduct a visual and
contextual analysis.
3) Once you have done both analyses, you will then provide an artwork that could
be compared/contrasted to your chosen artwork. NOTE: the comparison artwork
must already be in our textbook and must be in the same themed chapter.
Papers must be a minimum of 1,000 words and must follow all formatting guidelines that
not only have been discussed in class but are also detailed under our Writing Resource

*You can use the following questions to guide the BODY of your comparative essay:
a. What do the 2 selected works have in common?
b. What is different about them?
c. Which one do you think embraces the theme best and why? How is that
accomplished?
d. Now consider the cultural context of each work of art (both your museum &
text selection). What aspects of that culture affected the making of the
artwork?  Religion? Politics? Race? Gender? Class? Who was it produced
for? What was its function – social, economic, political?
e. Why is this artwork important?
*While grading your essay, I will ask myself the following questions:
a. Whether or not you satisfied the terms of this assignment. So, follow the
directions carefully.
b. Spelling, grammar, syntax.
c. Content. Does it make sense? Is it carefully considered and insightful? Did
you discuss the artworks in a significant and meaningful way? Is your essay
clearly organized?
d. Is there a thesis statement?
e. Did you make an effort and demonstrate knowledge of the material?
f. Did you conduct sound academic research and include 3-5 sources
