Relative dating estimates whether the object is younger or older; it does not give specific dates. While Chronometric dating provides a particular date and time range. Stratigraphy is a straightforward technique used for relative dating. The idea of stratigraphy came from the Law of Superposition, which are sequences of layers of rock and soil, the top being the youngest and the bottom being the oldest layers. It makes it easier to differentiate which fossils are older and younger. However, it does not provide us with specific dates or times. Luminescence dating is a technique used for chronometric dating. It provides us with information on the accretion of background radiation in soils. Electrons trapped in crystal structures of minerals are used to specify the age of residue. It can be used to date objects from less than 100 years to over 100,00 years when it is heated to 500 celsius or exposed to sunlight.
