Description

  1. What housing choices does one make? Live alone, roommate, live with family, multi-generational households. These choices have a big impact on urban land use. Demographically the United States has had different periods of time where people’s life choices, age to get married, age to have children, how many children to have, going to college, etc have changed and with those changes, there have been changes to the urban makeup. For example, the returning GIs from WWII quickly got married, moved to the suburbs, and had babies. This was known as the baby boom. This led to the quick growth of the suburbs and the rise of single family housing. Today in the US many cities can be made up of almost 75% of the land as single-family housing. These legacies of land use have an impact on today when the trends of getting married older, having children later, going to college, etc. The average number of people living in a single dwelling is going down. This means that more housing options are needed. Think about our cities today. How do they reflect the current demographics? In what ways does mixed-use development reflect the cultural choices of today? How does existing housing stock reflect older generations?
