Truama and Crisis Intervention
Description
Stigma surrounding police officers who report having emotional or psychiatric conditions is hard to overcome. In addition, police officers report the following concerns as barriers to discussing their trauma or requesting treatment:
Losing their job
Having their license to carry a firearm taken away
- Reassignment within the department to a less “stressful” position
- Ridicule and humiliation—essentially being seen as “weak”
- In your discussion post, discuss the four obstacles that prevent police officers from asking for help when experiencing symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Then propose some solutions, policies, or programming that could remove these barriers to treatment and ease concerns of police officers about seeking help.
