Strayer University Computer Science Discussion

Description

Physical links connect adjacent devices along with the data link in a single network. Physical layer standards specifically govern transmission media, connectors, and plugs. Ethernet uses two types of cabling today. These are 4-pair UTP and optical fiber.

  • Compare the two types of cabling of the 4-pair UTP and optical fiber in terms of transmission technology, maximum transmission distances, transmission speed, and cost.
  • Be sure to respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts.

Please respond to the student’s comment below:

4-pair UTP cabling uses twisted pair cables for transmission. It is the most common type of cabling used in Ethernet networks. 4-pair UTP cabling can transmit data up to 100 meters at speeds of up to 100 Mbps. It is also the most affordable type of cabling.

4-pair UTP cabling consists of four twisted pairs of copper wires. The pairs are twisted around each other to help reduce interference from other cables and devices. The wires are also shielded to help protect against electromagnetic interference (EMI). 4-pair UTP cabling is typically used for shorter Ethernet runs, such as between a computer and a switch or router.

Optical fiber cabling uses glass or plastic fibers for transmission. It can transmit data over longer distances than 4-pair UTP cabling, up to 10 kilometers. Optical fiber cabling is also capable of higher transmission speeds, up to 10 Gbps. However, it is also more expensive than 4-pair UTP cabling.
