I was interested in learning more about the demonstration teaching method. A demonstration method is a great tool for those who cannot understand the practical concepts of what is being taught in a formal classroom setting (K12 Academics, n.d.). The demonstration teaching method can help association concepts by visually showing the information, by presentations, videos, books, etc (K12 Academics, n.d.). This lesson will be discussing addiction to elementary school children who are categorized as pedagogy who are under 18 years of age, and college students who are categorized as andragogy, and Heutagogy who are a mixed age group between 18 years of age and older (Teachthought, 2022). Teaching heath literacy to individuals will require course material to be adjusted based on the age of the participants. Demonstration teaching will be used for educating elementary and college students about addiction.
For elementary school students, use the demonstration teaching method. The lesson will be in a group setting for the entire class. First, find an age-appropriate approved illustrative book about addiction. Once the approved book has been selected, gather all the students for storytime in the designated area in the classroom. This will be an opportunity to read and show kids pictures of what is being taught. Allow the children to interact throughout the book. Have the children ask questions about the pictures being shown and what it means to them, then read what the picture is stating. Don’t use your judgments use facts from the illustrative book about addiction.
This lesson will consist of students presenting information about addiction to the class for college students. The presentation will consist of 15 slides and each member of the group will need to participate in educating the class about addiction. They will be required to be put into groups of 4 or more. They will also need to select a leader of the group who will assign roles to each member of the group. Once the groups have been formed, they will have 2 weeks to research and 1 week to do the PowerPoint presentation together. In week 4 presentations will be delivered to the class. The presentation and research on addiction will need to include 5 key elements, which are social and economic effects on families, individuals, and society, problems associated with substance abuse, individual characteristics and behaviors, burdens that arise for families and society, and what help is available for addiction. The students will be evaluated on professionalism, quality of work, and substance of the information given about addiction.
