Over the past two weeks, our readings and discussions have been focused on establishing a baseline for understanding technology. This week, we begin our tour through the four lenses, beginning with history. As we dive into the four lenses, keep in mind that each lens is framed as a way of seeing the issue, not necessarily tied to the associated discipline. So looking through the historical lens isn’t just about History Channel documentaries, but about how you use this lens to understand the past and present. As you write your initial post, answer the following questions:

In what ways does looking through the history lens enhance your understanding of the role of technology in society?

Consider a current event regarding technology in the news that has a historical counterpart. How does looking through the history lens influence how you perceive both the current and historical events? Please share a news link to your events.

• Discussion 3Contains unread postsMichael Kizis posted Mar 14, 2022 7:31 AMSubscribeGood Monday Morning!History plays such an important role in our everyday lives.  If it was not for the past, and the lessons learned where would we be?  History allows us to see where we have come from to where we are now.  This applies to all our modern-day technology.  The first model T to the Tesla Model Y or the Wright Brothers first plane to the Airbus A380.  These are perfect examples of where we were, to where we are now because of technology.  Looking through the History lens allows us to understand the steps taken to get to today.  It also shows how reliant we are and sometimes how we take modern technology for granted.  History truly gives me an unparalleled look at how dependent we have become on technology. How long can most people go without being on their cell phone or computer?  I would not be completing my degree if it were not for technology and the computer I am writing this discussion on.A major topic in society today is the battle between fossil fuels and renewable energy.  Modern technology leads us to solar, wind and other renewable energy, but history relies on fossil fuels such as coal, and oil.  The History lens allows me to see, how at one point in time, fossil fuels were the latest and greatest thing for society, but technology has allowed us to harness other forms of energy to help create a better future for generations to come. This also helps show how technology plays out for our society, this would include the good and the bad. We are to see the good that technology does for our society such as computers, or health machines, We are also able to see the bad that goes into it such as cyber attacks, and different forms of online scams.A recent event that occurred regarding technology was a Russian hacker team that shut down the colonial pipeline. Looking through the historical lens helps me understand how someone from a different country could affect the way our machines work. It’s a crazy thought that hackers are able to affect us in such unbelievable ways due to the advancements in technology. These relationships are essential to the source of the data and will go to help tell the full story behind what the data is and what it actually means. There are many times when a large amount of data is compiled but doesn’t mean much of anything. This is where the relationships come into play to help explain the connection of some of this data.
