SDSU Physical Chemistry Reduced Masses Discussion
Description
1.Calculate the reduced masses of the hydrogen and deuterium atoms, using the following masses for the particles:
Electron: 9.1095×10-31 kg
Proton: 1.6727×10-27 kg
Deuterium: 3.3434×10-27 kg
a)Explain qualitatively what effect the different reduced masses will have on the Bohr radii and therefore on the positions of the lines in the atomic spectra?
b)The Balmer spectrum of hydrogen atom has a line of wavelength 656.47 nm. Calculate the wavelength of the corresponding line in the spectrum of deuterium.
2.Calculate the effective nuclear charge for a) Tellurium, b) Arsenic.
