Article 1:

Should Cigarettes Be Banned Completely?

https://soapboxie.com/social-issues/Should-cigarettes-be-banned-Arguments-for-and-against (Links to an external site.)

1) The article takes a look at the question of whether cigarettes should be banned completely and discusses the main points of the arguments on both sides. The first part of the article shows multiple arguments for banning cigarettes. For example it explains that cigarettes are the single biggest cause of premature death on the planet. It then goes into discussing facts about smoking in the USA followed by arguments against banning cigarettes. Lastly, the article has a list of famous smokers and is entailed by a statement following their name.

2) Overall this is a well-written article. One thing that stood out to me was that the article was not biased and states strong arguments for both sides of the debate. Along with this the author uses logos such as stating facts and statistics about smoking in the United States. For example it says that one in five deaths in the US each year is caused by smoking. Another thing that struck out was the use of quotes from people who are pro/against smoking to help illustrate both sides of the argument. Lastly, the author cited multiple sources to make the article credible using links and sources such as pubmed.

3) One growth point that could be included in the article is the use of pathos. I might suggest having someone explain a story about how cigarettes has been negative and another person explain how cigarettes have been a positive impact in their life. I believe this could add some more credibility into the article.

4) The author includes pictures and even a video within the article to help illustrate the story. Aside from this they could maybe include a chart or graph regarding statistics about cigarettes.

5) An idea for a follow-up story the author could write about is his side of the argument. After explaining both sides of the argument it would be interesting to hear his thoughts after all this research.

Article 2:

Should Cigarettes Be Banned In Society?

https://www.newtimes.co.rw/lifestyle/should-cigarettes-be-banned-society (Links to an external site.)

1) Like the first article, this article starts by stating the arguments siding with why cigarettes should be banned from society. In contrast with the other article, they suggest that banning cigarettes might be completely impractical but instead states that there can be measures to keep underage people from smoking and encourage safety for the general public. At the end of the article the author then explains the main arguments against banning cigarettes.

2) One strength the article showed was the use of pathos with illustrating a picture of a little girl. It appealed to our emotions because next to the picture, the author explains how most smokers start at a young age which makes it harder to stop when they grow older. The author also brings up very good points regarding both sides of the argument.

3) The article could use more logos when explaining certain arguments. Unlike the other article, there are no statistics about cigarettes and the actual harm it can do to your body. Another thing that can be improved on is describing the main arguments on both sides more rather than jumping from one point to another. Lastly, I would suggest transition statements to help the with the flow of the article.

4) The author includes the use of pictures within the article to help illustrate the story as well but the article could possibly benefit with the use of a chart or graph regarding cigarettes.

5) A follow up article could be about measures we can adopt to help with the health of second hand smokers and even young children before they become addicted to smoking.
