SDEV; Microaggression

Description

Discussion: Microaggressions

One of the ways we can work toward better intercultural communication is to be aware of when we use common place (intentional or unintentional) microaggressions in our interactions with others. Microaggressions are brief slights and insults that send demeaning messages to members of minority groups.

This activity will help us identify these messages and understand what they subtly say to others, especially to groups that are racially , ethnically, or otherwise different from the majority culture. Taking personal responsibility for using correct terminology and avoiding microaggressions is an important step in building trust and respect between and among various cultures.

What to do

In the Microaggressions handout, read through the rows. In each row there is a blank cell.

Fill in what you think the missing theme, actions, message is.

When you are done filling out the sheet, think to yourself or write a response that corresponds to the blank space in each row of your handout.

Discuss the following questions:

Why are microaggressions hurtful?

Are there an other examples of microaggressions you would be willing to share from your own personal and cultural background?

What should someone do if he or she experiences a microaggression?

What will you do with this information?
