The relationship that I found most compelling with the narrator which brings out a different side of her is the relationship she had with her father. Even though the father’s part in her life got cut off shortly after the story began, their relationship is loving and admirable. The love she has for her father is beyond any other relationship. Her father also loved her just as much and wanted the best for his daughter. It’s said in the book how he wanted a boy but when he got a girl it didn’t make a difference to him and treated her just like he would a son. The relationship that is most perplexing is with her uncle. They have a confusing relationship by not showing any interest in her because a women’s “job” is not to make carpets. After he sees how good she is he wants to make money off of her.
3. Rug-making is a major part that is important in the story. She did always show an interest in the art of rug-making, and this is what lead her to follow her passion. With regard to the narrator aside from monetary benefits rug-making is a way for her to escape her misfortune and make a better life for herself and her mother. It also has to do with her honor and dignity. It shows us the culture of Iran and the importance of rug-making throughout that society. It takes skill to become a rug-maker and their craftsmanship is shown in the work they do. Making carpets was used as a necessity and signify cultural heritage.
Post two
The narrator’s bond with her mother was the most compelling to me. It was amazing to see that her mom was constantly supporting her. That alone indicates that she has a small support system. Despite being in a terrible situation, the mother was able to care for her daughter. When the mother became ill on pages 304-312, the narrator took care of her, despite the fact that she had to beg for money on the street. Through all the challenges they were facing, they had never given up on each other.
The most perplexing moment occurred when the narrator’s family asked her to secretly marry Fereydoon. This implied that her aunt and uncle were just interested in her for the sake of her husband’s image. On page 117, it states that she was only married for “Sigheh” sex and that her uncle and aunt were well aware of the circumstances. They were, in fact, part of the planning team. She didn’t have much choice but to accept it.
The rug-making symbolizes the narrator’s strength and resilience. She is a woman who has seen it all. Life had presented her with many difficulties, yet she seemed unfazed. Her willpower was the only thing that kept her alive. Even though she has been instructed that rug-making is a man’s profession, she should not be performing it. She believed in herself and that she could accomplish anything a man could. Her only desire was to help her family. The narrator is aware that she is a talented rug designer. That she could become self-sufficient and live her life as she desired. She establishes a life for herself (and her mother) without the help of a man; she realizes that not every family is biologically related, and she learns to stand on her own two feet. I believe this story teaches us to always follow our dream no matter what. If no one believes in us like the narrator, hold on to the last string, and you will get somewhere in life.
