Conflict creates problems for characters to deal with. Once we determine a problem a character must deal with, we can apply the Problem-Solving Matrix to analyze the methods a character applies to solve the problem and the causal effects of their attempts. There are 5 major methods that characters generally choose from. Methods are applied alone or  combined. There are 3 effects that can result. Effects vary by degree and may also be combined.

Discussion Topic
Find each of the five methods applied by any character in any of the three short stories assigned under Module 4. Briefly state the problem.

Example

Toleration and Movement

In the novel Candide (upcoming novel), Candide is thrown out of his home by the Baron after the Baron catches Candide and Cunegonde in love. Candide uses toleration and movement by accepting the verdict and leaving the castle.

Accommodation and Invention

In the novel Fight Club (upcoming novel), the narrator wants sleeping pills from his doctor to fight his insomnia. His doctor refuses and tells him to visit support groups instead to see what real pain is. The character accommodates the doctor by attending support groups, but the narrator pretends (invention) that he has the illnesses. 

Domination

In the novel The Bluest Eye (upcoming novel), Claudia gets a white-skinned doll that she is told to love but doesn’t. Claudia rips apart (domination) the doll to find the essence of its significance.

Invention

In the novel The Life Before Us (upcoming novel), Momo feels unloved because his mother doesn’t visit. He creates (invention) an imagery friend from a broom as a way to give constancy in love to his life. 

Here is a student exampleDOMINATION:In “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, Pelayo captures the angel who had supposedly come to take the life of his son. In “The Necklace”, the loan sharks impose additional debts upon Loisel and her husband to force them to repay their large debts. In “The Lesson” the protagonist -Sylvia- continually taunts her friends as they become more receptive to Miss Moore and her message. ACCOMMODATION:In “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, the spider-woman joins a travelling carnival show and is fed meatballs from generous patrons in order to survive. In “The Necklace”, Mrs. Loisel’s husband uses the 400 francs he had set aside for a shotgun to instead pay for his wife’s dress. In “The Lesson”, the child Fly Boy is found to use his meager position and lack of a home as a way to remain in the good graces of “white folks”.MOVEMENT :In “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, the Angel flies away from Pelayo’s farm after no longer being deemed profitable. In “The Necklace”, Mrs. Loisel returns the diamond case back to Mrs. Forrestier after replacing the borrowed necklace with a substitute.  In “The Lesson”, Miss Moore takes the children on a trip into town, taking them out of their sheltered perspective. TOLERATION:In “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, the Angel tolerates the exploitation and cruel treatment thrust upon him by humanity.In “The Necklace”, Mrs. Loisel and her husband tolerate a decade of grueling labor to repay their debts.In “The Lesson”, Miss Moore tolerates the children’s’ immature antics, and remains determined to teach them a lesson concerning life and the world they live in. INVENTION:In “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, Pelayo and his wife Elisenda decide to begin charging onlookers to come and see the angel they have captured in their chicken coop. In “The Necklace”, Mrs. Loisel uses 400 francs and her friend Mrs. Forrestier to complete her incredible look for the party.In “The Lesson”, Miss Moore uses this trip into town as an avenue to depict the unjust nature of the world to the children in a way they can understand.
