Article 1:
Social Media’s Impact on Society https://www.adcouncil.org/social-medias-impact-on-…
1) This article talks about the impact social media can have on our world like with mental health, extremism and hate, public health crises, and digital activism. Their main focus/point is how social media is constantly changing and evolving and it is one of the main sources of news and information for people as well as a major platform for advertising which is basically dominating social media. Since advertising is shown a lot on social media these companies/marketers need to help inform the public rather than spreading false information.
2) Strengths that this article has are that it it gives ways in which social media/marketers can affect people and the world and they separate them into different categories so that the reader can read each section individually. Within each of the categories they give examples of what is happening through social media like with digital activism they talk about the Me Too movement and Black Lives Matter movement.
3) Some growth points for this article would be for the mental health section because they already say that social media can bring depression and loneliness to people, but they never really said how besides the fact that people have a never ending feed to scroll on. It would sound a lot better for the reader to be able to read some information on what factors of social media affect people so that they can have a better understanding.
4) I believe adding some pictures would definitely help the reader to visualize what the author is writing. Some ideas I have are so pictures from Instagram displaying the Me Too and BLM movements. Also, some charts to show so data on how social media is affecting mental health and the public health.
5) Something they could follow up this article with is if these factors they talked about is getting better or worse through time. It may take awhile to see change, but it would be interesting to see how much has changed with social media.
Article 2:
Social Media’s Growing Impact On Our Lives https://www.apa.org/members/content/social-media-research (Links to an external site.)
1) This article talks about the impact social media has on the day to day lives of adults and mainly young teens. The author separated the article into separate categories so that there can be one focus while the reader is reading it, these categories are social media and relationships, what about teens?, and risks of expanding social networks.
2) Some strengths this article presented is the amount of information they gave about the affect social media has on teens. They gave a lot of great facts and I thought the one that help this part of the article become strong is how they compared teens interactions with each other today versus in the 80s.
3) Some growth points for this article would be to add more information on the impact of peoples lives because the article title is kind of deceiving because I would expect to read about how it impacts society as a whole, but it goes into mainly talking about how it affects the lives of teens. So either they could change the article title or add information more information about the general public.
4) Some ideas for pictures/art would be like teens and how they use social media and even some data in the form of pictures so that people can get a visualization of the any data they talk about.
5) Some ideas for a follow up would be to write something that goes more into depth about the impact of social on the general public rather than just teens or if they want to keep it about teens they could write something about what social media platforms can do to help teens and not influence them in a negative way.
I thought both of these two articles explaining the impact of social media did a great job in giving information while also at the same time using the same format like separating the article into different sections in order to show their main points, but they gave different information.
