Prompt: Construct an essay in which you analyze (audience, development, rhetorical strategies/devices, appeals, purpose, underlying assumption, power verbs) and evaluate one claim (one 5-minute segment) in Call Me Intern. Select a section that (in)directly relates to the underlying assumption about an individual’s power in the labor market (self-sufficiency, personal responsibility, controlling one’s destiny, privilege, etc.). Compare or contrast this assumption to the way it relates to the underlying assumption in one of the arguments by Kraemer, North, Hatsukami Morgan+O’Connor, or Davidson.

For example. ***Kraemer, in “Stop Doing Companies’ Digital Busywork for Free. . .,” insist that Americans have been snared into being “complicit in their own exploitation” in the digital space (13, 25). She points out that many tasks done on the internet create additional unpaid jobs for users, profitable only to the companies. North, in “The Five-Day Workweek is Dead,” captures a historical view on how workers struggled to systemically control more of their time (2-3), that is, their lives. She contrasts the advances for labor made in more collective-oriented countries with minimal advances in individualized America. Hatsukami Morgan and O’Connor’s “Job Policies . . .” argues for government labor policies that directly support citizens’ well-being instead of funneling policy through business operations. This functions as an individualized safety net allowing businesses to adapt to market conditions. Finally, in “Airbnb hosts. . . ,” Davidson describes a pattern of higher ratings and tips for conservative hosts and workers (indirectly more money, hence more success) in gigs that individuals are working as they strive for success.

For example ***Kraemer complains about the theft of his time as companies require more and more customer labor while interacting with said company. Her solution takes what could be viewed as an individualized path to refrain from such unpaid labor. A solution that would not change the company operations unless many, many individuals opted out as well. A mass of individualized change is noted in North’s quote of Loomis as “a kind of ‘spontaneous realization by millions'” (30) that, coupled with Democratic agitation, might trigger change. In other words, if our work culture remains so individualistic, are we more or less likely to see favorable labor policy changes? Hatsukami Morgan and O’Connor’s view releases pressure off of businesses for nurturing the workforce by directly supporting individuals, who will benefit from the temporary assistance and reinforce society’s ownness on individual agency. Davidson’s is a curious research brief, given that politically conservative Republicans are much less likely to support unions than liberals. His strange focus on political ideology in the economy would likely only occur in an individualistic economy where someone would go measure individual tips and ratings; however, the “Political flareups” (12) he refers to reflect a collective political ideology treading upon the individualistic economic landscape.***

Evaluate which of your two arguments (Call Me Intern segment or one by K/N/HM/D) is more effective at persuading the intended audience and why. Integrate this in a minor way into your analysis.

Where to start brainstorming: Decide what claim from Call Me Intern you want to analyze and evaluate. Then choose one argument by K/N/HMO/D to evaluate in comparison to Call Me Intern. Analyze the rhetorical strategies for your Call Me Intern, and add a focus to the part you will use to discuss an underlying assumption regarding individualized prowess in the economic sector.
