Mary Rowlandson felt that the man who eventually came to own her, Quinnapin, was “the best friend she had” among the Wampanoags. Explain her relationship with him and his wife, Weetamoo. Explain how she feels about the Native Americans: does she feel they are human beings with agency and souls, or merely “devils” and non-human “heathen,” or does she move back and forth between those two possibilities? How does she explain the Native Americans fit into God’s plan for the English colonists?
