Question Description
I’m working on a religion multi-part question and need support to help me learn.
Q1 :
Jesus is a designated the christos. What did that term mean in Greek? What was it a translation of? What did christos mean? What were the historical associations with that word? How does that influence your understanding of what the earliest followers of Jesus expected Jesus to do?
Q2 :
The Jesus movement (what becomes Christianity) begins as a Jewish messianic sect. How is Christianity like Judaism? What was the invention/amendment/augmentation of the Jesus movement to Judaism?
Q3 :
Christianity was/is a messianic, apocalyptic sect of Judaism. Jesus was a Jew. All of the authors of the New Testament (as far as scholars can tell) were Jewish. At the heart of the Jewish Law (Torah) lays the idea of Deuteronomic Theology (do good be blessed, do bad be cursed). The Jewish apocalyptic worldview was born of extreme historical pressure and suffering as an attempt to buttress Deuteronomic Theology. Read the following passage, Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.
READ:
The Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7 (chapters 5-7) https://biblehub.com/nasb_/matthew/5.htm
INTERPRET:
Identify where Jesus is doubling down on the Torah/Law and where he has apocalyptically augmented the idea of “blessing” from that of Deuteronomic Theology.
