Read a short story and a poem. Answer 6 questions about both readings

Question Description

I’m working on a literature discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

Read “Unknowing Lyric” by Matthew Bevis and “Le Soleil (The Sun)” by Charles Baudelaire. Answer the following questions about the readings. Please let me know if you have more questions!!

Le Soleil: https://fleursdumal.org/poem/101

Unknowing Lyric: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/ar…

1) According to Matthew Bevis’s essay “Unknowing Lyric,” what is the origin of the term lyric?  What did it mean, historically?  How does lyric relate to song, sound, music?

2) What is the relationship between lyric and knowledge—or the condition of not knowing?

3) By Bevis’s definition, is Charles Baudelaire’s “The Sun” [“Le Soleil”] a lyric?  Why or why not?   Which definitions of lyric in Bevis’s essay, specifically, lead you to your argument?  What kind of lyric “unknowing” is at work in Baudelaire’s poem?

4) In the first stanza of Baudelaire’s “The Sun,” who is the “I”?  If the “I” sees rhymes, words, and verses as people, or as things, how does it imagine poetry?  Do we see the sun at all?  In what form?

5) In the second stanza of “The Sun,” do you hear an “I” anymore?  What is the sun doing here, and what do you think its relationship to the “I” of the first stanza might be?  Why is it significant that the sun “[m]akes poems […] bud and grow”?

6) In the final stanza, to whom does “He” refer?   What is the relationship of this “He” to “the poet”?  To the city?  To society and the social order?
