RC Evidence Based Practice in Nursing Education Question

RC Evidence Based Practice in Nursing Education Question

Question Description

I’m working on a nursing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

The Institute of Medicine recommended that nursing implement evidence-based practice (EBP) in the profession to improve patient outcomes. This is great in theory, however, there are several barriers to achieving this goal. One such barrier is knowledge. There are many nurses who have less than a BSN degree and those programs hardly provide information about the need for EBP. They prepare the nurse to care for patients and learn on the job. It wasn’t until I entered the BSN program did I learn about how important it is for this change. Lack of knowledge of the importance and lack of knowledge of EBP that relate to some nurses areas of care is a barrier that must be corrected.

Another barrier is work culture. When a place has been doing thing a certain way for a long time, there may be resistance to change. They take the “If it is not broken, don’t fix it” mentality. It takes strong leaders to go in and convince them through education, that EBP is the best approach for better outcomes( Rahmaynti, Kadar, & Saleh, 2020)
