Rasmussen University African American Authors Essay

Rasmussen University African American Authors Essay

Description

This semester, we have read and discussed many works by African American authors. One of the most prolific was Toni Morrison’s essay “Rootedness: The Ancestor as Foundation.” Within the essay, Morrison claims that “public and private life conflict with each other — that public life requires wearing a mask or adopting a persona.” A similar notion was presented by Paul Laurence Dunbar earlier this semester in his poem “We Wear the Mask.”

For your final paper, use these works as an anchor and answer the following prompt in 1200 to 1700 words.

  • This semester, what additional texts involve the deployment of a public face or mask for African American people?
  • ◦ What impact does this separation have in the examples you provide

    ◦ Is the usage of a mask helpful, necessary, or burdensome to African American people or preferred?
