Poem Analysis of Woman’s Work by Julia Alvarez
Description
ESSAY FORMAT: Must be at least 1,000 words, 12 pt. Time New Roman, double spaced MLA style.
This is an essay where you construct an analytical or interpretive claim on the poem.
the analytical claim should proceed from a close reading of two or three specific lines in the
poem from which you draw at least two (or more) keywords that will inform the language and
stakes of your analytical claim. The line(s) being focused on must be explained in the obvious way it can be interpreted, and the not so obvious way it could be interpreted. The claim must be supported by two (or more) reasons that explain
why you are making the claim; the reasons, in turn, must be supported by evidence in the form of
textual quotation and citation drawn directly from the language of the poem.
NO OUTSIDE RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE DONE AT ALL! Instead, rely only on your close-reading and annotation work for interpreting your selected poem. The only evidence you will be using in the Poem Analysis are the quoted lines from the poem itself
I suggest using the “Glossary of Poetry Terms” to help you identify any stylistic patterns, techniques, or devices in the poem that help you analyze it and construct your interpretative claim. Any of the poetry terms in the Glossary could also potentially serve as one or two of the keywords that you use to track, define, and exemplify your claim or reasons in the essay. Use the back of this assignment sheet to help you outline and organize the intro paragraph keywords, and analytical claim and reasons for the Poem Analysis.
