PBSC WK 1 The Theories of Career Development Summary

Description

Career Counselor: Section 1

There are significant developments that take place at each stage of career counseling. The various stages in the development of career counseling include job placement services (1890-1919), Educational Guidance in the Schools (1920-1939), Colleges and Universities and the Training of Counselors (1940-1959), Meaningful Work and Organizational Career Development (1960-1979), Independent Practice Career Counseling and Outplacement Counseling (1980-1989) and New Directions (1990-Present). The stage that I believe led to significant progress in the overall development of career counseling is the fourth stage focusing on meaningful work and organizational career development because it marked the beginning of the creation of legislation that was aimed at further developing the career counseling profession (Savickas & Savickas, 2019). The legislation enacted at this stage contributed to the significant growth of career counseling in organizations, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and businesses, with companies establishing internal career counseling centers. This enhanced the livelihoods of career counselors and enhanced decision-making for the individuals who needed career counseling. Multicultural considerations were made at these stages in that the various developments in career counseling were based on the nature of the events that were happening at that time. The decisions made concerning career counseling at that time were aimed at meeting the specific needs of different groups of people. This may positively impact people from marginalized groups because the diverse needs of people from different groups are addressed at every stage.

The historical developments that will be meaningful in my future work as a counselor

include the development of legislation guiding the practice of career counseling and the emergence of private practice career counseling. This will be important because legislation will guide my practice decisions to ensure that I adhere to the required legal standards of practice and guidance on handling any legal issues that I may encounter in practice. The emergence of private practice will help enhance my professional growth when I eventually venture into independent practice as a counselor. These developments were relevant to the career development of marginalized groups. The legislation makes provisions for the careers of individuals from marginalized groups, and the emergence of private practice provides room for them to have access to specific career counselors that can help meet their career counseling needs.
