Each student will be tasked to present during the semester about a scientific news topic. The student will find these articles on their own, explain the reporting quality, and compare it to the original source material (scientific study). Examine the who, what, where, when, why, and how and the conclusions of two news stories about the same topic; compare the conclusions to the source material for accuracy, reliability, and bias.

Presentation:  Science in the Media Comparison 

Find three sources total to compare: 

Two news sources about the same topic. One source from the left side of the bias chart and one from the right side (you may use any source format – written, audio or text)

locate the scientific study that was referenced in the lay article

Prepare a 6-to-8 minute narrated video presentation that:  

Summarizes the scientific study and use the who, what, where, when, why, and how the framework for analysis.

Summarizes each media article presented about the scientific study.

• Uses the who, what, where, when, why, and how the framework for analysis.

Review and analyze for reliability, accuracy, and bias.

• Compare and contrasts the news presentations to one another and to the original study and to one another.
• State if the media articles were accurate in representing the findings presented in the primary literature.

Explain why you think the lay reports accurately or inaccurately portrayed the findings of the primary literature and tell us which one you think was more accurate and why.
