Nutrition Question

Description

Optimizing LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations through lifestyle and drug therapy is the hallmark of cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention. Yet, years of research have provided evidence that elevated LDL particle number and small dense LDL (sdLDL) are also associated with an increased risk of CVD. Recent methodological developments have allowed rapid and standardized assessment of LDL particle number and size. However there is a debate on if LDL particle size and number can be used in clinical practice.

Read the following article and answer the questions below in your blog

Allaire, Janie; Vors, Cécile; Couture, Patrick; Lamarche, Benoît. LDL particle number and size and cardiovascular risk: anything new under the sun?, Current Opinion in Lipidology: June 2017 – Volume 28 – Issue 3 – p 261-266 doi: 10.1097/MOL.0000000000000419.

What is LDL?  What does it tell us about our health?

What ranges are considered ideal? borderline? high?

Do you think LDL particle size and number should be used in a clinical setting, either on its own or in conjunction with LDL-C, as a way to predict and manage CVD risk. Why or why not?
