NU Core Concepts of The Basic Human Needs Theory Paper

Description

The assigned reading for this module’s Reading Reaction is:

Abu-Nimer, M.  (2013). Basic human needs:  Bridging the gap between theory and practice. In K. Avruch and C. Mitchell (Eds.) Conflict Resolution Needs ATTACHED (Ch 9, pp. 165-185).  Oxfordshire: Routledge.

Several authors (Burton, 1990; Fisher & Shapiro, 2005; Maslow, 1943; Max-Neef, 1986; Rosenberg, 2005) are known for their work around the idea that all humans have basic needs that need to be satisfied to live and flourish individually and socially.  Satisfaction or lack of satisfaction has psychological and behavioral implications, particularly for conflict and conflict resolution.  Burton’s work on basic human needs is of particular interest to the field of conflict and conflict resolution as it represents one of the few comprehensive conflict resolution theories that aims to explain and predict conflict and it’s dynamics, and addresses intervention as well.  Abu-Nimer argues that Burton’s basic human needs is a foundational framework for the field despite criticisms and the theory-practice gap.

“I maintain that there are points of strength that the theory possesses in understanding the root causes of conflicts in deeply divided societies when the conflict mainly concerns issues of acknowledgement, identity and recognition” (Abu-Nimer, 2013, p. 166).

  • Abu-Nimer explores the theory and its shortfalls through the lens of practice.
