Northern Virginia Community College Story Listening Discussion

Northern Virginia Community College Story Listening Discussion

Question Description

I’m working on a management question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

An essential part of Appreciative Inquiry is interviewing people and helping people tell and feel their experiences. Over the week, I hope you can find a few people and spend at least 10 minutes asking questions. Encourage the person you are talking with by asking open-ended questions and responding with “tell me more” to elicit details. The focus is on them and expressing the story. These are two questions you can ask to get started:

  • Tell me a story about a time in your life when you have felt particularly joyful, creative, successful—a real high point. Make yourself the hero/heroine of the story. Share the details about what happened, who was there, what you did, etc.
  • Without being humble, tell me what it is that you value most about yourself.

The blog is not to tell the story that the person told, but how the experience of the conversation went. Questions to consider:

  • How it was for the person to tell the story? Did it lead to positive emotions? To making connections?
  • What did you appreciate about hearing the story?
  • How did you experience simply listening with no other purpose in mind?
