New York University Vindication of The Rights of Women Journal

New York University Vindication of The Rights of Women Journal

Description

  1. Journals: There are several purposes for writing journals:

– to encourage you to react independently to the materials read and the class discussions.

– To help you clarify your thinking about the readings before you come to class discussion of the reading.

– To help you evaluate and revise your initial reactions after class discussions of the readings.

Journals are to be typewritten and double-spaced, with attention paid to grammar and spelling. Each journal entry will address the topics and discussions of the previous weeks class, as well as the reading for the upcoming weeks class. Please answer both of the following questions for your journal:

  1. What topics (I want to hear about at least two) struck you the most from each reading assignment for this journal and why? Please answer for each section of (or days) reading assigned, and if there are more than one chapter, one from each chapter. Either way, it should be at least two topics for the day. The readings are broken down into 2 reading sections per week, as a guideline, but there should be two topics per days reading. I want to see solid evidence that you have read and digested the material. I want a full substantial paragraph per topic. Don’t summarize the reading – I am looking for the “why”, the reason why the light bulb went off in your head when you read that section. On the day the journal is due, include all readings since the last journal, including the reading on the day that it is due.
  2. What struck you or challenged you from the past weeks zoom or online class discussion? Again, I expect a full, well-thought-out paragraph.

******* Format: Please make sure that you separate each reading, by the day and reading title, in headings, as well as listing Question 2 separately after question 1.

The journal is a method of assessment for both the student and instructor to gauge the learning process. You are expected to take some time and be thoughtful about the entry and be careful about grammar and spelling. In addition, it is expected that you will use inclusive language, especially avoiding sexist language! Please make sure your name and date and journal number are at the top of the first page of each journal! Use Word format!

Journals are due by 11:59 pm on the due date, in the appropriate place on Canvas. Please do not email me your paper. Late journals will be marked down five points for each day they are late. After five days you will not get credit for the journal. A day is considered late the minute after midnight it appears. Barring unforeseen circumstances, journals will be graded before the next journal is due.

Past week’s discussion:

The dangerous ways ads see women | Jean Kilbourne | TEDxLafayetteCollege

(Links to an external site.)

1 and 2. Please discuss 2 things that strike you from this video.

3. We now have a vice president who is a woman of color. She may possibly be the next president of the United States. What are your thoughts about that?

1. To begin the film, I thought it fascinating that kids as young as six months can identify advertisements. It never occurred to me that the simplicity of design we see on roads and in the streets may be connected to corporations selling to children under the age of eight. This reminds me of the marketing technique used in the candy industry, notably how they make their wrappers stand out in colors that are evocative of the hues of fruits. In turn, I find this intriguing in light of Kilbourne’s remarks about teenagers learning about sexuality via commercials. It seems that we are trained to interpret the world in specific ways and appeal to ideals that celebrate sexuality among young children from a young age via marketing.

2. Another aspect of the film that struck me as very disturbing, and even disgusting, was the idea that children were being sexualized at such a young age. Jean’s mention of padded bras and thongs for 7-year-olds, as well as high heels for newborns, astonished me since they were allegedly available at big department shops. I’d never heard of this before, so hearing it for the first time made me laugh out loud. Seeing images of young children posing for images that ostensibly aim to promote their sexual appeal as well as seeing images of young children posing for images that ostensibly aim to promote their sexual appeal as well as seeing images of young children posing for images that ostensibly aim to promote their I also agreed with what she stated about how some advertisements depicting children in this manner have a tendency to normalize hazardous acts committed against children.

3. In reaction to the possibility of a future president of the United States being a woman of color, I believe it’s amazing. Aside from the obvious reasons, I believe this would be an excellent role model for young girls, particularly those who see themselves in the female president. Growing up, I never imagined a woman could be president since there is no proof of it in history. I was always told that you had to be born in the United States, have lived in the country for at least 14 years, and be at least 35 years old to qualify. Then I always automatically added, “It has to be a man.” Women in the White House, I think, would demonstrate to young girls that this is not the case.

The upload files are the readings you need and an example of how I want this to be done.( Please write it in first person, like:”I agree with…..” “I agree there are…” “I believe ….”
