Think about your family, your upbringing (primary socialization), your community, including your parents’ friends, your friends, your place of worship and your school (secondary socialization).

1. During your upbringing:

a. Which groups of people (e.g., racial/ethnic groups, generational groups, immigration status, disability status, sex/gender identification, etc.) did your family openly accept? How was this acceptance communicated (e.g., actions or statements that family members would make to signal that particular groups of people were accepted)?

b. Which groups of people did your family not accept? How was this non-acceptance communicated (e.g., actions or statements that family members would make to signal that particular groups of people were not accepted)?

2. During your secondary socialization, including your educational experiences:

a. Which groups of people experienced -isms and phobias in your friends’ circle, community and school? b. Which groups of people enjoyed privilege? What was their privilege based on?

c. Did you/your family experience – isms, phobias in your community? *

d. What privileges did you and your family enjoy? Think beyond race.

e. Which languages were present in the community/school where you grew up/attended?

f. Who spoke these languages (e.g., races, ethnicities, generation, national origin, etc.)?

h. Which languages were negatively regarded (i.e., linguistic racism)? Who spoke those languages (e.g., races, ethnicities, generation, national origin)?

“SLPs who are oriented toward social justice should be mindful of how their own understandings and perspectives on racism, ableism, classicism, linguicism, and heteronormativity can hinder or strengthen relationships with those that they interact with in professional settings.” (Horton, 2021, p. xxviii).

3. As you continue to orient yourself toward social justice,
