Miami Dade College Social Science Linguistic Inequality Essay
Description
For this essay, you will explore further the issues of language and power you were introduced to in Chapter 9. In particular, you will discuss why some languages and dialects are perceived as better than others. This is often referred to as linguistic inequalities.
Instructions:
Find a social issue that is impacted by linguistic inequality. Find evidence for it in the form of a news article or academic paper. (A news article is an article from a media source like a newspaper or magazine such as the New York Times, FOX, The Washington Post, VICE, etc. that addresses a current event. It does not include general information websites and sources like Wikipedia, eHow, dictionaries, academic journals, online encyclopedias, etc.)
Write a 300 word (minimum) essay that answers the following questions, referring to the article and course materials, NOT random sources:
What is human language? From an anthropological perspective, are some languages or dialects better than others?
What are language ideologies and language inequalities? Where do they come from? Make sure you understand the difference between these terms. See Chapter 9.
- What are two (2) examples of language inequalities or language ideologies mentioned in your article?
What evidence is there to show that these exist?
