Module 3 – Essay

For this essay, you will explore the key concepts of ethnocentrism and cultural relativism you were introduced to in Chapter 8 and relate them to events in the real world.

Instructions:

1. Find a recent NEWS article that addresses an example of ethnocentrism and cultural relativism. (A news article is an article from a media source like a newspaper or magazine such as the New York Times, FOX, The Washington Post, VICE, etc. that addresses a current event. It does not include general information websites and sources like Wikipedia, eHow, dictionaries, academic journals, online encyclopedias, etc.)
2. Write a 300 word (minimum) essay that answers the following questions, referring to the article and course materials, NOT random sources:
   1. What is culture?
   2. Provide three (3) examples of ethnocentrism and cultural relativism.
   3. How does the artlcle you chose exemplify ethnocentrism at work in the world today?
   4. How would a cultural relativistic approach improve the situation?
3. Discuss the article(s) that you read in detail and tie the findings to what you learned in the module.
4. Your essay should:
   • Include a minimum of 300 words.
     • Provide a true – essay format: independent paragraphs and double spaced.
     • Avoid a single block essay.
     • Include your name, date, instrutor’s name, and the title of your essay.
     • Do not include meaningless filler statements
   • Be written in complete sentences and paragraphs.
   • Be proof-read for clarity.
   • Use factual information from the textbook and/or appropriate articles and websites.
   • Include a conclusion. Use your own words. Do not retell what the article(s) said.
   • Be careful! Pay attention to spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar.
   • Be original work – your submission will be checked for plagiarism.
   • Cite all your sources – type references according to the APA Style Guide.
     • Essays without proper citations and/or large portions copied from other sources will receive a zero.
