1. Context: Writing is a medium that gives way to a host of techniques and genres. Yet, theme is ever present regardless of the type of writing that is produced. Looking at how themes may or may not be cross pollinated throughout works offers insight into how ideas are created and spread into society. 

Purpose and Audience: The purpose of this assignment is to have you look at poetry and prose from a critical/academic lens rather than one from a leisure/consumer lens. By looking at the causation of the themes at are expressed in the work, you will gain a greater understanding of the catalyst and creative process that births pieces that have lasted throughout time.

Instructions: You will compose a one-thousand-five-hundred (1500) word essay that analyzes and compares the themes of two poetry, two fictional, and two non-fictional pieces from this module’s readings. As you compose your essay, be sure to explain and/or describe how the writers’ use of figurative language or conventional language affects the way themes are received by the reader.
