1-The selection of an appropriate research design is based on the careful analysis of the problem statement and research question. The current study explores the effectiveness of bundled interventions in reducing hospital readmissions due to heart failure. The pre/post study would be best explored in a research design that offers the researcher the ability to manipulate the experiment while ensuring all ethical and research principles are maintained. As such, the best research design for the proposed quantitative research would be a quasi-experimental approach. According to Miller, Smith, and Pugatch (2020), quasi-experimental research designs are best suited to address topics and interventions that measure the effect in the absence of randomization. The proposed study would analyze the impacts of bundled nurse-led interventions without randomization since all patients admitted due to heart failure within the selected facility would be included in the study process.

Though randomization mitigates research risks such as selection bias while enhancing the likelihood of generalization of results, their application is limited to studies that do not pose risks to individuals. The proposed study is on quality improvement within a clinical setting where proposed interventions have been associated with enhanced outcomes with increased benefits to individuals. As such, all patients would be involved since the interventions would entail improved outcomes with minimal risks in accordance with the needs of evidence-based research. Handley et al. (2018) noted that quasi-experimental research designs are associated with numerous benefits when applying pre-post intervention measures with non-equivalent control groups. The advantages of quasi-experimental research designs include the simplicity of data collection when the research involves a smaller number of time points and are less cumbersome to implement in quality improvement projects.

2- For the research problem identified last week which related to nurses being offered mental health services following a sentinel event such as in-patient suicide, I have chosen an embedded design. This is a multiple case study design that involves the use of a wide variety of data from multiple sources including interviews, observations, and documents. In qualitative research there is a great focus on the events that transpire as well as the outcomes of those events from the perspectives of those involved (Teherani et al; 2015).

An embedded case study methodology provides a way to integrate both qualitative and quantitative methods into single research. The more data to help better understand a phenomenon the better. This is just one benefit case study research which is becoming increasingly popular among qualitative researchers. One of the reasons being that it offers a level of flexibility not offered by other qualitative approaches. As a study design case study is defined by interests in individual cases rather than the methods of inquiry used. This method makes use of naturally occurring sources of knowledge, such as people or interactions that take place. Multiple data are collected, and analysis methods are adopted to further develop and understand the case, shaped by context and emergent data (Hyett et al; 2014).
