Interdisciplinary work teams are best suited for achieving patient-centered care. Is this statement accurate? If so, why? If not, why not?

I believe that the statement interdisciplinary work teams are best suited for achieving patienti-centered care because it is one of the 5 core competencies for all healthcare professionals that would be a part of the team (Finkelman, 2019). Patient centered care is the main objective for interdisciplinary team in hospitals because it allows the patient access to physicians or APRN with different specialties to treat their unique issue. For example, once the physician diagnosis a patient and a care plan is in place many health care professionals will need to work together to carry out the care plan.

Patient-centered care prioritizes the patient and all aspects of their physical, mental and emotional health. To truly achieve good patient centered care their care has to include interdisciplinary work teams. Interdisciplinary work teams is a “process where members of different disciplines assess or treat patients independently and then share information with each other” (Finkelman, 2019). The reason this is so crucial to patient-centered care is because specialty doctors are needed in certain situations to achieve a higher level of health than can be achieved by only one healthcare provider. For instance, if a patient has depression and COPD it is important to address their mental health with a psychologist or psychiatrist coupled with the help of a respiratory therapist and a primary care physician. This allows the patient to address all aspects of their health and become a healthier individual. Treating only one of these may delay the healing process and can even make their condition worse.
