Assignment Rationale: The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with a real-world
opportunity to summarize and analyze significant court cases applicable to the field of sport
administration.

Assignment Details: As sport administrators you will inevitably find yourselves party to a
variety of lawsuits. While it will be in your best interest to hire a licensed attorney for such legal
matters, it is critical that you understand the laws and legal rules that govern your conduct as a
leader of a sport organization.

Case briefing – a practice utilized by attorneys, paralegals, and law students – is a process of
summarizing and analyzing judicial opinions that allows for better understanding of precedent
cases applicable to the facts of your situation. These case briefing assignments will provide
opportunities for you to practice your briefing skills while simultaneously allowing you to better
understand the law and legal process.

For each case briefing assignment you are required to conduct a search for, and locate, one (1) of
the legal cases listed in a relevant chapter in the course text. After locating the full text of the
selected case, you will carefully read the case to better prepare your brief. When you feel you
have a thorough understanding of the case, you will then summarize and analyze the case into a
formal case brief. Your brief should include the following: case citation/title; relevant facts of the
case; judicial history of the case (procedural history); legal issue/question relevant to the case;
legal rule applied by justices/judges; judicial holding; summary of court’s reasoning (analysis);
summary of concurring or dissenting opinions.

Your case brief should be 1-3 single-spaced pages
