Studies show many employees decide whether to stay with or leave a company during their first few months. Tasks associated with employee dissatisfaction – bureaucracy, paperwork, reading manuals or watching videos in isolation – often characterize new hire orientation programs.
- Describe your own organizational entry experience(s), good or bad. They don’t have to be
job-related. You experience socialization whenever you join a group, e.g., an athletic team, extracurricular organization, community volunteer group, etc. What were some positive aspects? Some negative ones, if any? - Next, make the connection to workplace socialization. What are at least two specific, actionable strategies a company should use when socializing new members to its culture? The past experiences you described in #1 may vividly illustrate ‘what not to do’, as in the “I showed up…” quote, above. If so, orient your strategies around avoiding these unpleasant experiences. Be sure to describe your strategies in enough detail that they are actionable – that means practical, easy to understand and to implement.
